Museum of Bad Art

The logo for the Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) features intentionally clashing letter forms to reflect the museum's celebration of unconventional, "bad" art. By breaking design rules, the logo mirrors the chaotic, playful nature of the museum’s collection, embracing imperfections and adding a sense of intentional discord. The design captures the essence of the museum’s unique approach to art, where what might be perceived as "bad" is celebrated for its creativity and individuality.

Process Work

This identity began with sketches of wordmarks, imagery, and acronyms. As I reviewed all the sketches, a simple flower drawing stood out as a unique symbol that could be incorporated into an acronym for the letter 'O.' Initially, I focused on creating wordmarks, but when I started sketching more freely—exploring random ideas like flowers and faces—the concept of using one of these as a letter came to life.

After conducting type studies and finalizing an acronym mark, the idea of using multiple typefaces became clear. While design typically adheres to rules about mixing typefaces, I chose to intentionally make the logo 'bad,' allowing me to break conventional design norms on purpose. This approach led to the use of several typefaces in the main mark, with Roboto selected for the text on the right and a flower replacing the 'O.'

All the process work culminated in the final logo, which combines multiple typefaces and a playful, childlike flower to convey the 'bad' design aesthetic that aligns with the concept of the museum.
